PLATELET CONCENTRATE INJECTION

PRINCIPLE OF PLATELET CONCENTRATE INJECTION:

The use of platelet extracts has been documented in medicine for many years, particularly in the field of sports medicine, to ensure localised regeneration of tendons, ligaments, cartilage and muscle fibres.

As part of the treatment of baldness, a field of choice of the ASCLEPIOS Clinic, the injection of platelets into the scalp has regenerative and repairing faculties on the hair, by allowing the local release of growth factors by the body. The result is hair that is more healthy and more resistant to falling out.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SESSION :

This regenerative medicine treatment is primarily intended for all patients suffering from alopecia, and in particular the best known of them, androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness). The injection of platelet concentrate must be preceded by a diagnostic blood test to determine the cause of the alopecia, particularly if it has a hormonal component. This is the value of an initial medical consultation, which will identify patients who will respond to PCI treatment.

PCI is a completely biocompatible material, as it is extracted from the patient’s own body. It should be noted that this treatment is only effective on areas of the scalp that still have even minimal hair density: bald areas without residual hair will not benefit from the effects of ICP.

WHICH PATIENTS IS PCI INTENDED FOR? :

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL THE PATIENT NEED?

The most commonly accepted protocol is the need to carry out 3 sessions more or less close together, i.e. 3 to 4 weeks apart. Then a maintenance of 1 to 2 sessions over the year is recommended.

PCI also acts as a great potentiator of results for hair transplants: in this context, it is advisable to carry out 3 PCI sessions in the 3 weeks preceding the hair transplant, then 2 sessions 1 month after the transplant, also enabling the patient to be seen again on this occasion.

AND WHAT RESULTS CAN BE EXPECTED FROM PCI?

The results of PCI are very promising, making this treatment the leading solution to hair density loss today. The benefits observable from the first session is the considerable slowing down of hair loss.

The second effect is an improvement in the quality of the hair, which becomes thicker and more resistant: however, this effect can be observed several weeks after the treatment, acting from the root of the hair. Several hospital-based clinical studies on the benefits of PCI have been conducted to date, summarised through these frequently asked questions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS :

Yes. This increase has been scientifically demonstrated following an initial treatment with PCI of one monthly injection for 3 months. Hair density measured by Trichoscan increased on average from 12 to 45 hairs/cm2 according to the study.

An increase of 10 to 20%. The 2006 study by Uebel & colleagues described a 15% higher hair yield in follicular unit density in areas pre-treated with PCIs compared with controls.

Yes. Hair loss has been assessed in studies by the traction test, which was negative in more than 95% of patients after at least 3 sessions of PCI.

Yes. In the study by Kang et al, hair diameter increased on average by 31.3% 3 months after the first injection session and by 46.4% 3 months after the second injection session.

PCI is not a substitute for a hair transplant. The growth factors of PCI act on the stem cells present in the bulbous area of the follicles, resulting in neovascularisation and neofolliculogenesis, which promotes regrowth. They can improve transplant take but PCI cannot create new follicles on bald skin. It is not uncommon to see new hair growing in an area that has already been treated but has a lot of hair bulbs. So we prefer to say that PCI does not allow the creation of new hair.

Minimal to non-existent. The PCI procedure is a relatively effective and safe procedure with minimal side effects, including temporary and tolerable pain during treatment, mild headaches that may subside, minimal itching.

Three sessions at 1 monthly intervals as an initial treatment then two sessions per year for life. PCI is recommended as adjuvant treatment and patients are encouraged to continue topical treatments (e.g. minoxidil) because PCI does not suppress the hormonal component of androgenic alopecia. PCI can also be used during and after hair transplanting to improve transplant yield and maintain transplant survival.
